Week 1
Technology is the future…that’s what we are told! Everything is now accessed online, making an appointment, paying a bill, booking train tickets, or buying a washing machine. Communication is digital, handwritten letters are fast becoming a thing of the past, now people ask for an email or suggest a video call. All is well and good if this is your thing, but what if it’s not?! What if you don’t use computers, you don’t know where the mouse and spacebar are on a keyboard, and there is a special key called escape that takes you back to where you started when you’ve pressed the wrong key… It can all be overwhelming.
So, buying a reconditioned Chromebook and mustering up the courage we attended our first Google classroom, it’s a classroom but not as we know it! It’s a small group of people learning to use technology in a fun, relaxed community hub setting. The sessions run at a user-friendly pace and no question is stupid, which was useful for us as this gave us the confidence to ask. We had lots of lightbulb moments, discovering little things that will make day-to-day life easier, and feeling a bit more included in the World Wide Web. One of the best things about Google Classroom is the ‘how to guides’ that are available to access in your own time, these help you to practise what you have covered in the workshop. Steve designs all the user guides, you can even contact him in the online classroom to ask a question.
We enjoyed it so much that we are going back for more, check back in for an update on week 2!
